If you are under 25, car insurance can be expensive. Click here for some of the best deals.
1. Try and get cover on your parents' car insurance. Remember you will not get any no claims bonuses until you have insurance cover in your own name.
2. If this is not possible, buy a small, safe and inexpensive car. Do not go for something sporty or with a big engine and remember that diesels are normally cheaper to insure and cheaper to run. You can buy something sporty when you have built up your 'no claims' or when you are over 30.
3. You will probably only be able to get car insurance for "Third party, fire and theft". This means that if you hit a pedestrian or another car (third party) your insurance company will pay for any damage that you do. Remember every time you have an accident your premium will rise next year.

4. If your car is burnt out or stolen the insurance company will only pay you about half of what it will cost you to get an equivalent replacement car.
5. In the event of your car being written off, send your insurance company a letter quoting second hand car prices, and always be polite when you talk to them.
6. When you have some no claims bonus, normally after driving for 3-5 years without making an insurance claim, the insurance company will sell you comprehensive insurance at a sensible price. This covers the repair costs of any damage to your car as well as any damage done to a third party vehicle. But again remember they will increase your premium next year, if you make a claim, and, unless it is protected, you will lose your no claims discount.
7. This discount is usually 10% for each year in which you make no claims, going to a maximum of 50-70%.
