Items you should always have in your car

1. In case you have an accident you will need a pencil or pen and some paper, in order to make a note of the other driver's name, address and registration number.

2. Call the police if the accident is bad or if someone is injured.

3. Keep your mobile phone to hand, and make sure it is sufficiently charged for your journey. Also have some coins in a safe place (stored out of site) for the telephone, you may need to call for a vehicle recovery unit or your insurance company.

4. Make sure you keep the phone numbers of your insurance and breakdown cover provider handy. If you do not yet have breakdown cover, please view our top 10 guide for suggested companies.

5. A torch and a warning triangle, in case an accident or breakdown happens at night.

6. A disposable colour camera. This can be proof of how the accident happened and proof of what you are saying. This is especially important if you need to take action at a later date. A digital camera is another alternative, as the results are instant, and can be shown to the other party on the spot. Make sure that the camera you use has a flash unit, in case of a night time accident, and that any batteries are fully charged.

7. A blanket and first aid box. Remember that these are basic requirements in some European countries.

If you have an accident in Europe, the legal situation is more or less the same as in the, although you should also have a phrase book to help overcome any language difficulties. Please see our step-by-step guide. One thing you need to remember is never admit it was your fault. If you are asked to sign documents that you do not understand, write, "I do not understand", or ask for a translator to explain each and every point to you. If you do this, you are covered against your insurance company claiming that you admitted liability.
